DNS, or Domain Name Servers, translate domain names such as www.old-photo.com into the routable IP address, such as 69.36.166.80 . It is much easier to remember a name like Old-Photo than it is to remember a number, hence the need for Domain Name Servers. Each time you type a domain name into your browser address bar, a DNS query is issued in the background. Internet Service Providers, such as your cable company, supply the DNS service to their customers. That is why, if you are using "Charter Cable" and you type a domain name into your address bar and you typed it wrong, you get an errror page from Charter Cable. If your cable service is as "good" as our Charter service, you will be waiting a while for Charter to get your DNS information and get you to the page you are looking for. Generally, an Open DNS server is going to be much faster.

Here is how to set up your computer to use the OpenDNS server.

Right click on your Network Places desktop icon:

Right Click on it and chose Properties

 

Click on the Local Area Connection and then click on the View Status selection on the Left.

 

Click on the General Tab and select Properites

 

Highlight Internet Protocol and select Properties

 

In the "Use the following DNS server address" area,

This is for Open DNS connection:

Preferred DNS would be 208.255.222.222

Alternate DNS would be 208.67.220.220

 

Save your settings.

Now open your browser and type http://bit.ly/ye0eG into your address bar.

 

If you get this page, you did it correctly. This will also work with Vista.
