We have been looking for a fix for this problem for a couple of years. Microsoft has been absolutely no help at all. Neither have the KVM switch manufactures. We use four computers hooked onto one video monitor/mouse/keyboard setup. When we switch from one computer to another, using the KVM switch, the computer loses track of which monitor is being used and defaults down to a low resolution screen. Each time you have to go into the monitor settings and reset the resolution.
The fix is to pull a pin from your monitor cable. Yeah. Nobody wants to risk that. But, you can do it by getting a cheap cable extender and pulling the pin on that. Then put that extender inbetween your monitor and your KVM switch. It works.
This splitter will do the job for you. All you need is to just use one of the female connectors. Break the pin on the male connector.
Here, below, you can see where a VGA pin 12 was before we broke it off with a needlenose pliars.
Make sure you break it off all the way down to the bottom.

The pin you want to break off is pin 16. See it circled, below.
If you want to disable this pin on your HDMI cable, see below. You can carefully put a piece of electrical tape on this pin and acheive the same affect.
