Restoring Windows Search Companion
Installing Windows Desktop Search replaces the Windows Search Companion. I hate the WDS. Windows search companion is easier to use and doesn't take up near as much room on your hard drive. Even after I uninstalled the Windows Desktop Search and the huge data file disappeared, the Windows Search Companion did not reappear. The little doggy was still at the bottom of the dialog but I wanted the little doggy to be the default search. Well you can change it.
Open RegEdit by going to Start / Run then type regedit
Go to the following node:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
Software\Microsoft\Windows Desktop Search\DS
Then double-click on 'ShowStartSearchBand' and set the value to '0'. Close that and you're done. The next time you try to "Search" in Explorer, the old, reliable search companion will appear. This applies to Windows XP.
